Erb's Palsy Symptoms

Erb’s Palsy happens when the nerves connecting the spinal cord and neck to the shoulder and arm become injured, stretched or severed. The most common reason for this injury is shoulder dystocia during a difficult birth, which is when the baby’s head is stretched away from the shoulder.

Erb’s Palsy symptoms can range from mild to severe. In general, Erb’s Palsy symptoms include a limp or paralyzed arm, little or no muscle control in the arm, hand, or wrist, and / or a lack of feeling or sensation in the arm or hand.

Erb’s Palsy symptoms depend on which nerve was injured, the site of the nerve injury and its severity. In some babies, Erb’s Palsy symptoms might not be obvious, especially if the injury is mild. Erb’s Palsy symptoms sometimes appear a while after the injury, while others can even clear up on their own.

In mild cases such as neurapraxia (stretched nerves), Erb’s Palsy symptoms can disappear on their own in a matter of weeks or months. In more severe cases where the nerve is severed, Erb’s Palsy symptoms will not go away on their own. In this case the baby may need surgeries and rehabilitative treatment, possibly for many years.

If your baby experienced shoulder dystocia or any other difficulties during birth, keep a careful watch for Erb’s Palsy symptoms. For injuries that do need treatment or rehabilitation, the earlier you can intervene, the better your child’s chances are to get better.
